Short-term Rental Zoning
The council debated whether to restrict Airbnbs to commercial zones and sunset existing permits on sale. Hosts, realtors and a retiree who depends on rental income pushed back; neighbors of problem properties pushed for limits. The ordinance failed 6-3, so current rules stay in place for now.
FY 2027 Budget and Tax Rate Rebalancing
Assistant City Manager Matt Watson walked the Youth Council through Garland's $1 billion budget, showing how property taxes, sales taxes, Garland Power & Light and the regional landfill pay for police, fire, streets, parks and libraries. He explained the 3.5% revenue cap and why the city must prioritize every year.
All Abilities Initiatives
